World Hunger Day 2026

By providing meals for more than 3 million children at their place of education, the global school feeding charity Mary’s Meals is putting this year’s World Hunger Day call to action into practice: “The End of Hunger is in Our Hands.”

Hunger is not inevitable. This is the central message of this year’s World Hunger Day, themed “The End of Hunger is in Our Hands.” Global charity Mary’s Meals fully embraces this message, having worked for more than two decades with the belief that there is enough food on the planet to sustain everyone, and that no child should go hungry in this world of plenty.

According to the latest UN estimates, global hunger is beginning to decline, but this progress is fragile and far from enough. Around 43 million children worldwide suffer from acute malnutrition, and there are 78 million primary school-age children (approximately six to 11 years old) who are out of school, while only 27% of schoolchildren in low-income countries benefit from school meals programs.

Thanks to thousands of helping hands working together to make this possible, Mary’s Meals serves nutritious meals every school day in 16 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Behind every cup and bowl there are volunteers who prepare and serve food, teachers who welcome children into class, parents and communities who help make the daily meals possible, local partners who deliver the program, and supporters all around the world.

Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, Founder and CEO of Mary’s Meals said today:

“This year’s World Hunger Day reminds us that ending hunger is not someone else’s task. It is in our hands. At Mary’s Meals, we live that truth every day in the many hands that make each of our meals possible: hands carrying firewood, stirring pots, filling mugs and bowls, and collecting donations – all helping children to take their place in the classroom.”

Only by joining hands can change happen, and a world without hunger become possible. Today, Mary’s Meals celebrates all the volunteers, communities, partners, and supporters helping children to overcome hunger and fulfil their potential.

Canadian volunteer stories reflect this spirit. In Calgary, supporters gather annually for the Basketball Bonanza tournament, which brings together teams from Calgary Fire and Calgary Police in support of Mary’s Meals. Alongside volunteers and supporters from across the community, the event raises awareness and vital funds to help provide school meals for children around the world.

Jill Mowser, Mary’s Meals administrator and event organizer from Calgary, said:

“Events like Basketball Bonanza show how a community can come together in a simple but powerful way to support children facing hunger. Every person who volunteers, plays, donates, or shares the story is helping create hope and opportunity for children who need it most. It reminds us that ending hunger really is in our hands.”

In Malawi, Mary’s Meals reaches more than a quarter of all pre-primary and primary school children, and tens of thousands of volunteers work together to make this possible, changing the future of Malawi’s children through their hands. These volunteer cooks – many of whom are parents or grandparents – are facing the same hunger affecting the wider community.

At Tafika Primary School in Malawi, volunteer cooks from surrounding villages take turns preparing porridge for children.

Amy Nkola, a volunteer at Tafika Primary School in Malawi, said:

“Preparing the porridge is our way of giving back. It is reassuring for us as parents that our children are eating in school, and the children know they will find food there. There is hope now that we have porridge, because porridge means they also get an education”.

Similar stories are seen across Mary’s Meals’ global programs, where volunteers, local cooks, partners and communities work together to help children access nutritious meals and stay in school.

On World Hunger Day, Mary’s Meals is inviting people to recognize the power of simple, practical action in the fight against child hunger. By joining Mary’s Meals, everyone has the end of hunger in their hands. Many hands, working together, can help make that possible.
