International School Meals Day - reaching more children in Ethiopia

Today is the UN’s International Day of School Meals and we’re delighted to recognise this by confirming an expansion to our school meals program in Ethiopia.

Together with our partner Daughters of Charity, and of course through the many little acts of love from our supporters, we’re able to serve a daily meal even more schools in the Tigray region.

Around 45,000 children are now benefitting from the opportunity to attend school and receive a school meal.

However, for children like Selemon and Mahlet, where our school meals are currently not served, they remain in desperate need. They both attend Ara Primary School and with the incredible support we have been receiving through our crisis appeal, we hope to reach them and their classmates soon - once again encouraging hope for a brighter future.

Selemon and Mahlet

During a visit to Tigray last week Shona Shea from our Comms team witnessed a mother and four children turn up at the Beati-Akor Primary School holding out their hands to the school children to ask them to share their school meals with them. One pupil, 12-year-old Amlak, shares some of her Mary’s Meals, even though this sacrifice means she won’t have all she needs to eat herself. She does it without question, knowing it might help them to keep going for one more day.

Amidst the tragedy in the region right now, our school meals are beacons of hope.
