Calgary school to host public talk by Mary’s Meals founder

Magnus will have the unique opportunity to talk to students and members of the public at the Calgary school on Monday, 26 September at 7pm, seeking to inspire them with the story of Mary’s Meals – from our humble beginnings in a tin shed in rural Scotland to a global movement of people, including supporters of Mary’s Meals Canada, who believe that no child should go hungry in this world of plenty. 

Magnus will also share news of our efforts to help those affected by the current food crisis in Malawi, where a horrible combination of floods and drought has devastated crops, leaving 6.5 million people facing chronic hunger. Mary’s Meals recently launched an urgent campaign, Crisis in Malawi, to ensure that the more than 800,000 children there who already depend on our school feeding program can continue to be fed, and – as funds allow – to expand our work to reach even more children in the most chronically food-insecure areas. 

Mary’s Meals Canada is supported by committed volunteers and supporters across the country, including many young people. The event will be a chance for those attending to find out how they can get involved, and help impoverished children around the world to build a brighter future. 

Magnus said: “Mary’s Meals Canada plays a huge part in supporting our life-changing work in Malawi, where we rely on 80,000 dedicated community volunteers who cook and serve the meals each day. The incredible support from our fantastic volunteers and supporters in Canada and around the world means that we can reach 880,383 Malawian children with a nutritious daily meal in their place of education.

Magnus’ bestselling book The Shed That Fed A Million Children, which tells the extraordinary story of Mary’s Meals, was published in Canada in paperback in May 2016 by HarperCollins. 

Mary’s Meals was inspired, in part, by Magnus’ Catholic faith and is named in honour of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Our organization consists of, respects and reaches out to people of all faiths and none.
